Houston is home to interior design schools that prepare students for
careers in the field. The schools offer associate degree and certificate programs in interior design. According to the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, interior design involves applying creative and technical solutions to a building's interior to achieve function, enhance the quality of life and
culture of its occupants, and make it aesthetically pleasing to the naked eye.
Houston Community College
Houston Community College offers an interior design program at its central campus. Students who complete the program receive an Associate of Applied Science in interior design. According to its website, Houston Community College's interior design program is one of 18 of its kind in the country that has Foundation for Interior Design Education Research accreditation at the preprofessional level. Houston Community College's interior design program is endorsed by the National Kitchen and Bath Association and is recognized by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, the state's regulatory commission that oversees the registration of Texas-licensed architects, landscape architects and interior designers.
Houston Community College's interior design program requires students to complete 72 semester credit hours. The program lasts six semesters, which are spread over a 2-year period.

The Art Institute of Houston has two campuses in the city that offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design. The program requires a total of 180 credit hours and typical takes 12 quarters to complete. The required courses for the Art Institute of Houston's interior design program include design fundamentals, color fundamentals, and kitchen and bath design. Students at the Houston interior design schools have received national recognition. In 2010, Art Institute of Houston senior interior design student Frankie Dziedzic beat out 600 other students to win the Sub-Zero/Wolf National Kitchen Design Contest.

Lone Star College
Lone Star College offers interior design programs at its Kingwood campus, which is located only about 12 miles from Houston in the northwest suburbs of the city. The 2-year community college has an interior design certificate, Associate of Science in interior design, Associate of Arts in interior design, Associate of Applied Arts in interior design and bachelor's degree in interior design programs. Lone Star College dates back to 1973, when it was known as North Harris County College.
