Home Design Trends: Conversation with Architect Mark Burgess

Architect Mark Burgess is a founding partner of U+B Architecture and Design Inc., a Minneapolis-based architecture and design firm. U+B does commercial interiors and residential construction, additions and renovations.

The firm designed the Spoonriver restaurant in downtown Minneapolis and is currently handling master planning and design for the Assoufid development in Marrakech, Morocco. The project includes 80 luxury villas, a five-star hotel and golf club.

MLuxe grabbed Mark for an interview to discuss trends in home design, architect-client relationships, and more. Enjoy.

What are today’s homeowners most interested in?

I think most people want to have something that’s tailored to their site, tailored to their lifestyle and tailored to their budget. I think there’s a realization that a house that isn’t designed for you isn’t really the best value.

It’s not about square footage; it’s about creating memorable spaces and memorable rooms. Another thing people are more conscious of is, when they’re adding onto a venerable old house, they want the addition to be a seamless piece of the house.

You often see an older house with an addition that looks like the 1970s. And I just groan and think, “Couldn’t they have put a little more thought into it?” Architects can add a lot of value in helping the homeowner think these things through.

How does the architect-client relationship work?

It’s really hard to have successful projects without great clients and great client ideas. As an architect, you want to ask them hard questions: “If you could have this or this, which would you choose?” We balance a lot of different goals between spouses, designers and budgets.

What’s the role of quality in assessing a project?

It’s very important. It’s all about using the right material in the right location, something that’s durable and long-lived. It has to do with making appropriate decisions.

What kind of styles are your clients interested in today?

Increasingly you’re seeing people who are willing to experiment with modernism. I think people are willing to juxtapose traditional houses with very modern interiors.

We recently did a very modern interior in a Cape Cod house. I think people find that interplay between traditional and modern very interesting.

But I think most people want traditional detailing — the feeling of the trim and the material — but they want modern spatial combinations. Older houses tended to be a series of discrete rooms that didn’t open into each other. Now people like wide open spaces.

Are you seeing more interest in outdoor spaces?

The spaces that provide transition between outside and inside are incredibly important. Spaces like porches, screen porches, decks — I really consider them outside rooms.

We work a lot with landscape architects. It’s really a pleasure to collaborate with people who are talented with plantings and earth.

Also, a home really has to be anchored to a specific site. You think about where you want to put the screen porch: do you want the sun to rise on that space or set on that space? Where are the prevailing breezes? Those kinds of decisions anchor a house in a way that can be really poetic.

Can you say a few words about windows?

We specify Marvin windows almost exclusively because they have great customer support. My partner had a question about some Marvin windows. He called them and got an answer right away — no waiting around for three days. They stand behind their products.

They also have flexibility — you can get them in lots of different types and sizes, and they perform very well. With Marvin, if you want a window to be two inches narrower in one dimension, they can make it happen. That kind of flexibility is important for me as an architect.

Future Home Designs – Australia Architecture with Flow

Australian architects Tony Owen Partners designed Moebius House in Dover Heights, Sydney. Right from its very beginnings, this ultra-modern home design is the future of innovation and technology. According to Tony Owen Partners, the house is “an example of ‘liquid architecture’ whereby projects are designed parametrically using 3-D digital software to respond to environmental issues.” Maximizing natural ventilation, the views and the home’s efficiency, while minimizing its impact on the neighbors are the key criteria of the method. An innovative design process suits the end result – a futuristic style of architecture that seems to flow from the top down in smooth lines and curves. The steel-framed and-clad house cradles vast walls of glass, allowing for panoramic vistas of Sydney Harbour. The window walls open to outdoor entertaining areas, doubling the home’s living space. The sun-soaked interior, like the exterior, has a fluid open-concept layout with a minimalist interior palette and contemporary concrete floors and futuristic features like the suspended fireplace and semi-enclosed staircase. If your struggling to find a high street bank that will part with their cash for a mortgage and happen to have £4,000 a month burning a hole in your pocket, then this letting property in Somerset could be for you. The Dairy House is an achingly hip conversion of a 1901 cheesemakers cottage that has been the focus of much attention from design press and country-bumpkin reads, such as Country Life, alike.

Built on the site of what was a single-storey wine vault, squeezed in between two Victorian buildings, and set back slightly from the street this unique property in popular Maida Vale, London, is obscenely clean and minimal, as will be your bank balance after it’s been shed of £6,000 a month!

For just short of a million quid you can get your hands on this 2/3 bedroom penthouse of more than 1,500 sq ft in one of London’s most critically acclaimed apartment blocks. Described by Jonathan Glancey of The Guardian as “a minor masterpiece”, Number One Centaur Street was designed by the famous de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM) architects.

Finally, this 6 bedroom apartment is described as ‘perhaps the most significant architect-designed apartment to be built in London in recent years’. The penthouse which was built on top of an existing warehouse was designed by the firm Tonkin Liu in collaboration with Richard Rogers who is best-known for pioneering public projects such as the Pompidou Centre, the Lloyd’s Building and the Millennium Dome. If you are looking to aqcuire a living piece of architectural history you can expect to pay some serious money, as you may imagine, price is on application only.

Although like other K2Ld houses it’s form differs from usual ones. It uses linear elements like others but they are accompanied by non-traditional elements. Sensible Bedroom Lighting Techniques Which Add Elegance To The Bedroom!

Want to bring ambience to the bedroom? Then interior lighting is the most important thing you need to consider. Add artificial lighting, which brightens up the bedroom. Many love their bedroom to be dull and sober without much lighting.

Lighting is very much important in the bedroom; you need a dark room for sleeping but if proper lighting is not present in the bedroom it hinders the other activities such as reading, relaxing and watching television.

Different lighting models:

Kinetic lighting: These are used to lighten up the corners of the room when you switch the main light and want to give a sober effect to the room. These lights are just like candles which add spark to the room. The most famous kinetic lights are bubble lamps and lava lamps. These lights are lit up to bring a calm and soothing effect to the room and support sleeping.

Face forward: This light is arranged near to the dressing table, supporting you to get ready. This light will ensure that you do not see any shadows on your face. The most famous face forward lighting to be arranged in the bedroom are incandescent lights and halogen lights. Florescent lights are not preferred as they give hard light.

Wall lighting: This type of lighting is getting famous now-a-days and this type of lighting adds elegance to the bedroom. The color of the bedroom walls also influences the lighting in the bedroom. If you have a dark tone on the bedroom wall and want this tone to spread in the bedroom, then focus lighting on the wall. By focusing the light on wall, the color of the wall bounces back and creates the wall texture on to the room.

There are other types of lighting which can be arranged in the bedroom, but these lighting are the most famous lighting techniques for adding grace to the bedroom.

Many people think that white color is a perfect one for a bedroom, because it is light and associates with cleanness. White color is calm and can help to relax after a working day. Two Combined One-Bedroom Apartments With Built-In Furniture and Mood Lighting

This apartment consists of two one-bedroom apartments in an East Village Coop overlooking Tompkins Square Park. It’s designed by Joel Sanders in modern style with multi-purpose built-in furniture and mood lighting as a flexible loft-like environment conducive to living, working and entertaining. These three areas have their own distinctive features like a built-in couch for lounging and watching media, and a work surface for working and dining. The kitchen island and the bathroom with a shower and a soaking tube are clad in black granite.
