Interior store design might not be one of the first things that you think of when contemplating ways to bolster your store’s profit. But maybe it should be.

It is an interesting time to be a store manager or owner. The realities of the worst economy since the great depression are putting an extreme amount of downward pressure on sales and profit. Too many managers are so tuned in to the mathematics of profitability, i.e. inventory turns, days on the book, gmroi, etc, that they fail to consider how successfully their store design interfaces with their customers. In an article titled Reality Check that appeared in the October 2009 issue of Hardware Retailing, Dan Tratensek, the author, made a strong case for the fact the managers don’t understand how customers define customer service. While the surveyed managers defined customer service in terms of people, knowledgeable and friendly, many of the customers said that it was about the environment instead. They spoke of selection of product, easy to find product and easy ingress/egress as important too. In fact over 30% of those surveyed said that these were more important considerations than were the friendly, knowledgeable employees.

That is strong argument for reexamining your store’s interior design and layout. For example if you redraft your store’s design exposing vantage points to the longest or deepest areas possible you will, no doubt, make the store appear larger. Make your store appear larger and your customers will infer that your store has more products and better selection. Contrast this against a store design that makes the shopper feel confined by tall gondolas set up in a fashion that blocks views. If the space in which the customer is shopping feels small or restricted, then not only does the customer feel uncomfortable, but she also senses that the store is smaller and now the inverse, feels that your store has less selection.

Consider introducing some space into your store design. Perhaps you’ve noticed that the trend is away from the towering gondolas that we saw being used so predominately just a few years ago. Makes sense to me. With lower gondolas one can improve turns, force their way into making sure the dogs are eliminated and once again, by opening deeper vistas into the store, make it appear larger.

Good retail store design is as much science as it is art. So, go ahead get busy. It’s time to reexamine your retail store design and make it profit focused

Through this contemporary houses plan in Australia, we will see the combining art and living space for our sustainability. Seeing from the whole landscape from in front of this house, we can found the basic concept from this house. The double half round presented that this house was also a place to showed the art. Suitable with the green yard in front of the house, this was a perfect art contemporary design for a white bright house. This house design by gold coast also showed when we’re entered this home. Start from the sexy purple carpet here, we can feel this place as a place for entertain and converse. Completed with round glass table and open landscape, this living room also supported by a round sofa with bold flower tile for the cushions. Go on to the next place, we’ll found unsuspicious dining room include kitchen. The art work can be seen in the red set of chairs and the round glass table poles. It was a great combination for both useful and beautiful. The cream color of the kitchen was suitable with the blue ceiling for air circulation. This is modern house called Sosnowski designed by Chen + Suchart Studio in Tempe, Arizona. Located on the outskirts of Tempe’s urban center, the home exudes an industrial aesthetic. A pronounced steel frame constructed from I-beams is the skeleton for the upper volume, which sits upon a concrete block base. The façade of the upper level is composed of thoughtfully placed windows and naturally weathered corrugated steel panels. The interior pairs concrete floors, exposed ductwork, and industrial light fixtures to create a loft-like atmosphere. Despite its industrial pretense, the Sosnowski Residence remains habitable and inviting thanks to a central gathering space on the ground level that merges the living, dining, and kitchen areas into a single space that fully opens to the surrounding city and desert.

Home Design Trends: Conversation with Architect Mark Burgess

Architect Mark Burgess is a founding partner of U+B Architecture and Design Inc., a Minneapolis-based architecture and design firm. U+B does commercial interiors and residential construction, additions and renovations.

The firm designed the Spoonriver restaurant in downtown Minneapolis and is currently handling master planning and design for the Assoufid development in Marrakech, Morocco. The project includes 80 luxury villas, a five-star hotel and golf club.

MLuxe grabbed Mark for an interview to discuss trends in home design, architect-client relationships, and more. Enjoy.

What are today’s homeowners most interested in?

I think most people want to have something that’s tailored to their site, tailored to their lifestyle and tailored to their budget. I think there’s a realization that a house that isn’t designed for you isn’t really the best value.

It’s not about square footage; it’s about creating memorable spaces and memorable rooms. Another thing people are more conscious of is, when they’re adding onto a venerable old house, they want the addition to be a seamless piece of the house.

You often see an older house with an addition that looks like the 1970s. And I just groan and think, “Couldn’t they have put a little more thought into it?” Architects can add a lot of value in helping the homeowner think these things through.

How does the architect-client relationship work?

It’s really hard to have successful projects without great clients and great client ideas. As an architect, you want to ask them hard questions: “If you could have this or this, which would you choose?” We balance a lot of different goals between spouses, designers and budgets.

What’s the role of quality in assessing a project?

It’s very important. It’s all about using the right material in the right location, something that’s durable and long-lived. It has to do with making appropriate decisions.

What kind of styles are your clients interested in today?

Increasingly you’re seeing people who are willing to experiment with modernism. I think people are willing to juxtapose traditional houses with very modern interiors.

We recently did a very modern interior in a Cape Cod house. I think people find that interplay between traditional and modern very interesting.

But I think most people want traditional detailing — the feeling of the trim and the material — but they want modern spatial combinations. Older houses tended to be a series of discrete rooms that didn’t open into each other. Now people like wide open spaces.

Are you seeing more interest in outdoor spaces?

The spaces that provide transition between outside and inside are incredibly important. Spaces like porches, screen porches, decks — I really consider them outside rooms.

We work a lot with landscape architects. It’s really a pleasure to collaborate with people who are talented with plantings and earth.

Also, a home really has to be anchored to a specific site. You think about where you want to put the screen porch: do you want the sun to rise on that space or set on that space? Where are the prevailing breezes? Those kinds of decisions anchor a house in a way that can be really poetic.

Can you say a few words about windows?

We specify Marvin windows almost exclusively because they have great customer support. My partner had a question about some Marvin windows. He called them and got an answer right away — no waiting around for three days. They stand behind their products.

They also have flexibility — you can get them in lots of different types and sizes, and they perform very well. With Marvin, if you want a window to be two inches narrower in one dimension, they can make it happen. That kind of flexibility is important for me as an architect.

Australian architects Tony Owen Partners designed Moebius House in Dover Heights, Sydney. Right from its very beginnings, this ultra-modern home design is the future of innovation and technology. According to Tony Owen Partners, the house is “an example of ‘liquid architecture’ whereby projects are designed parametrically using 3-D digital software to respond to environmental issues.” Maximizing natural ventilation, the views and the home’s efficiency, while minimizing its impact on the neighbors are the key criteria of the method. An innovative design process suits the end result – a futuristic style of architecture that seems to flow from the top down in smooth lines and curves. The steel-framed and-clad house cradles vast walls of glass, allowing for panoramic vistas of Sydney Harbour. The window walls open to outdoor entertaining areas, doubling the home’s living space. The sun-soaked interior, like the exterior, has a fluid open-concept layout with a minimalist interior palette and contemporary concrete floors and futuristic features like the suspended fireplace and semi-enclosed staircase.
